The Power of Laughter

Have you ever laughed until your sides hurt?  Until you could barely catch your breath?   Until your eyes watered?  Do you remember how you felt after?  There’s a good chance you felt more relaxed and ready to take on life’s challenges.

Researchers Dr. Lee Berk and Dr. Stanley Tan at the Loma Linda University in California have been looking into the effects of humor on the body as a whole and they have found Laughingsome great benefits, including lowered blood pressure, decreased stress levels and an improved sense of well-being.  We could all use that!

First, let’s talk about blood pressure.  Many of us take medications or eat a diet focused on items to reduce blood pressure.  However, even those of us with normal blood pressure can reduce our risk for strokes and heart attacks by adding laughter to our daily regimen.

Next, how can laughing reduce stress?  When you laugh, the level of stress hormones in your body is reduced, along with anxiety.   You’ve probably also heard that when you are stressed, your immunity against illness drops.  The reverse is true for laughing and relaxing – when the stress hormones are reduced, your immunity goes up.  Some studies show that humor and laughter may raise levels of infection-fighting antibodies and boost the levels of immune cells.

Another bonus of frequent laughter is tummy toning.  A good hard laugh works many of the same muscles you would use during mild aerobic exercise and helps relax your muscles and raise endorphins, which are our body’s natural pain killers.

Adding laughter to your daily activities is fun and easy to do.  Simple things like calling a friend and reminiscing about fun times, talking to a silly grandchild or friend, and reading a funny passage can lift your mood and help you feel good all over.

Laughing is fun, healthy, exercises abdominal muscles, reduces stress, increases your immune system, and more!
